The government expanded its role in and took responsibility for the protection of the consumers.

Ironically, Sinclair wrote The Jungle in order to show to the public how mistreated and abused are the workers and especially the immigrant workers by showcasing the harsh conditions they worked in in the meat industry, but people were more concerned with the various health violations and unsanitary way the meat was handled which the novel revealed and that  led to the government intervention.
