Phonemes don't have invariant properties besides production in isolation. All phonemes are impacted by coarticulation. People have to depend on contextual cues and their experience in order to properly decode speech, which is simply the act of perceiving or understanding the words that demonstrate points. If you have not used or heard of a word before, it is much harder to understand what it means or even to repeat it to someone.
