At the end of the story, the narrator undergoes an epiphany. As he’s engulfed in the darkness of the bazaar, he realizes that his infatuation for Mangan’s sister is just that—an infatuation. His dreams of being with her are empty fantasies. He also realizes that his dreams of escaping the monotonous and tedious life of Dublin for a newer, more exciting life are useless. He knows that Araby is not what it claims to be. The reader doesn’t know what direction the protagonist will go in at the story’s end, but it is clear that the protagonist has undergone a notable transformation regarding his desires and values and his self-awareness.
