A number is equal to twice a smaller number plus 3. The same number is equal to twice the sum of the smaller number and 1. How many solutions are possible for this situation?

There are no solutions for this situation. =)
we have the 2 equations:-

N  = 2n + 3

N = 2(n + 1)  or

N = 2n + 2


N cannot be equal to  2n + 3 AND 2n + 2.

Therefore there are no solutions.
