Just divide the amount of gallons by 4:

1 3/4 = 7/4

(7/4)/4 = 7/16

 Each pitcher will have 7/16 gallons.

1 and 3 /4 can be made an improper fraction by
multiplying 4 by 1 = 4 and adding 3 = 4 + 3 = 7
so improper fraction is 7 / 4 = 1.75 gallons

1.75 gallons divided into 4 pitchers = 1.75 gallons divided by 4 = 1.75 / 4 = 0.4375 gallons
