The trapezius' primary function when all of its fibres are engaged is to keep the scapula in place.

The trapezius is a sizable pair of surface muscles with a trapezoid form that runs lateral to the scapular spine and longitudinal from the occipital bone to the lower thoracic vertebrae of the spine. It supports the arm and moves the scapula. A lower (ascending) part of the trapezius medially rotates and depresses the scapula while the upper (descending) part supports the weight of the arm. The middle region, known as the transverse, is responsible for retracting the scapula.
