Fiddler on the Roof is a book written in 1964 by Joseph Stein for a musical with the same title. Joseph Stein, an American playwright, received a Tony Award in 1965 for the best musical playwright.

Just like other books that are made into movies, there are bound to be differences in interpretation and or representation.

What are the differences between the book and the musical (film)?

  • In the book, for instance, Tevye meets Lazar Wolf in the bar. In the movie, however, Tevye goes to Lazar's house where they discuss marriage. The producer probably did this to showcase Lazar's wealth.

  • Also, unlike in the book, the movie portrays Fyedka and Chava to be more friendly.

  • In the book, there is a talk about activism and an uprising. The movie, however, shows this in detail with Perchik leading the activism. He is also arrested by the police in the movie.

What in film most impacts the meaning?

It is easy to see that the movies made some events clearer. For example, although the book was very detailed in its description of certain events, it was hard to put a finger on what the mood was in some cases.
