Genes are made of a pair of alleles.
When the alleles are the same, the gene is homzygous. When they are different, the gene is heterozygous.
When the alleles are different and the gene is a Mendelian gene, one of the alleles would be dominant while the other would be recessive.
However, organisms with heterozygous Mendelian genes will always express the dominant gene in their phenotypes.
