General MacArthur was the commander of the United Nations troops that were sent to aid South Korea against the North, a position he was relieved of in April 11, 1951 due to what Truman termed as insubordination and incompetence stemming from;

  • MacArthur ordering the UN forces to cross the 38th Parallel after China had warned them not to. Once they did, the Chinese sent over 800,000 men against them and this led to Allied losses.
  • MacArthur wanting to fight the Chinese all the way back to China and even use Nuclear bombs against them to gain total victory over China. President Truman did not want this because he did not like their chances against China at the time with their resources overstretched.
  • MacArthur continually criticising the President and accusing him of restricting his actions in the war which was why victory had not yet being achieved.
