The second aspect of public goods is what economists call “nonrivalrous consumption.” ... If the good is excludable, private entrepreneurs will try to serve as many fee-paying customers as possible, charging lower prices to some customers if need be. One of the best examples of a public good is national defense.

National defense is a public good because it:

  • is provided by the authorities of a nation
  • is provided for the good of all the citizens in the country
  • is provided for free to everyone.

A public good is one that is provided such that everyone in society is able to enjoy its benefits without having to bring out any money for it.  This is why it is mostly given by the government who do so without wanting profit.

National defense is therefore a public good because:

  • the government provides the armed forces and other services related to national defense
  • everyone in the country gets to enjoy the government using these services to keep them safe
  • even people who don't pay taxes still benefit from a safe society as a result of national defense

In conclusion, national defense is a public good.
