Israel wanted to "be like other nations..." Unlike God's plan which was to be different or "Holy." The people also wanted the Identity of a God as well; meaning they wanted to have some relation to him. Their ideas revolved around wanting a male military leader. Ultimately they craved a human ruler, capable of failing, rather than an all mighty God.
